Total knee and hip replacements are common practice for orthopedic physical therapist, but total ankle replacements are not performed commonly.
Lesson: Take care of your joints, because replacing any of them is not a fun process. TAA take a longer period to recover due to the increased weight bearing demand on the ankles. People are usually immobilized for the first 2 weeks and then wear a CAM boot 23 hours/day to protect the ankle. Recovering the mobility and strength is a lengthy process that could take 4-6 months for a full recovery.
